Toyota HiLux Tuning done properly, the first time
The 2.8L 1GD-FTV HiLux is one of the most tuned vehicles in the country, and for good reason. Toyota calibrates it for global fuel quality and a very broad duty cycle, which leaves it soft off the bottom, laggy in the low range and prone to gear hunting when there is weight on board. Custom tuning addresses all three. We adjust fuelling, boost, timing and throttle mapping together, then log the result under load — so what you get is a ute that pulls cleanly from low revs and stops feeling breathless with a trailer behind it.

What Tuning Fixes on the 2.8 HiLux
Three complaints come up on nearly every 1GD HiLux that arrives here: a flat spot off idle, a delay before the turbo comes on song, and an automatic that will not settle on a gear when the ute is loaded or climbing. All three are calibration problems rather than mechanical ones.
A custom tune brings boost and fuelling in earlier and more smoothly, sharpens throttle mapping so the pedal actually correlates to what the engine does, and adjusts shift points and lock-up behaviour so the transmission stops hunting. The ute feels like it has grown an engine size — most of that is torque delivery rather than peak numbers.
Towing and Working Utes
A HiLux towing a boat or a tandem trailer at highway speed is working hard, and heat is the enemy. Our towing maps prioritise mid-range torque and cooler exhaust gas temperatures, which is exactly what you want on the run up the range. The result is fewer downshifts, less throttle to hold speed and a far more relaxed vehicle.
Work and fleet HiLuxes get a different priority: clean loaded take-offs, consistent economy and good response in traffic. If you run several utes we can put the whole fleet on the same calibration for consistency.
Supporting Upgrades and Reliability
The 1GD's factory intercooler is a known bottleneck once the engine is making more power, particularly in Queensland and Northern NSW summer heat. An upgraded intercooler and a 3-inch exhaust let a tune deliver its full benefit while keeping intake and exhaust temperatures sensible.
We check the vehicle's condition first — service history, injectors, intake cleanliness and boost integrity — and we monitor exhaust gas temperatures and rail pressure through the tuning process. Reliability comes before headline numbers, every time.
